Sheep Trap is a game designed to test your reactions times, by shooting sheep and a wolf with tranquillizer darts.

sheeptrap

Sheep Trap is very simple. When one of your five sheep tries to run away, press the dart button at the bottom of the screen. If you see a wolf coming in to kill one of your sheep, do the same. It’s that simple. If you throw a dart when there is no reason to do so, your score for that shot will be three seconds. Once all five of your sheep have tried to run, your reaction times are shown in a list.

There are no other levels or challenges on Sheep Trap and it is designed purely to test your reaction times. The animation is nicely done, but after you’ve played this game a couple of times, the novelty will have worn off.

iPhoneWorld.ca: Flash Memory Lawsuits Filed Against Apple

July 30, 2009

iPhoneWorld.ca writes:

BTG International, a UK-Based patent licensing company has filed lawsuits to Apple, Dell & Sony for allegedly infringing five of their patents regarding flash memory being used with Samsung chips. These patents relate to electronically alterable, non-volatile memory cell chips being use in consumer electronics.

The company is seeking financial reimbursement due to damages along with a ban on the import of infringing devices such as the iPhone & Blackberry. Rumours suggest the chips are being used in the Apple iPhone, iPod and MacBook Air amongst cybershot digital cameras and Dell Laptop’s.

BTG doesn’t manufacture the chips, merely making their money from licensing the patents that they own. Back in December 08, they filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the same district, it would seem they have known about this for some time, yet only recently decided to take action which makes me wonder why such action has been taken.

We’ll be covering the story as it progresses. Original Article by 9to5mac.

iPhoneWorld.ca: Car Mania: iPhone App Review

The App Store has brought a slew of ingenious games to iPhone owners all around the world and Car Mania is no exception. If you like Flight Control, you will love Car Mania.

carmaniamain

In Car Mania you must direct different colour-coded vehicles to their respective garages on the map. There are taxis, police cars, motorbikes and even lorries. To direct them to their specific area, you drag a path to where you want it to go. At the top of the game screen there is a ‘road rage’ meter, which fills up when cars crash, get stuck behind other cars or stuck at construction work. When this is filled (no matter which game mode you are playing), the game is over.

carmaniany

There are three game modes in Car Mania, which are unlocked when you get to a specified amount of happy drivers. Your ‘happy drivers’ total is shown at the top of the screen on the main menu. Survival is the first game mode. In survival mode you have to direct traffic to the designated areas, and see how long you can last before your road rage meter gets to 100%. Survival has totally unlimited time, so how long you play depends on your skill (my best is about 13 minutes). Time Attack is the same type of gameplay as survival, except in time attack you have four minutes to get as many cars as possible to their destination. Road Rage is slightly different to time attack and survival mode. You must cause as many crashes as possible within the three minute time limit. It isn’t as easy as you might think, as the vehicles won’t rear-end each other, so it has to be head-on collisions.

carmaniafw

There are three levels in Car Mania: New York, Freeway and Central. New York has two garages, blue and yellow, and has four areas where cars will appear from. Freeway is, as the name suggests, a freeway. There are two lanes of traffic, which both split into three so you end up with six lanes of traffic to direct. This level appears easy at first glance but after a while, it becomes incredibly difficult. Freeway is also the one level that doesn’t have road rage mode, as there is no way to make vehicles crash. Central, in my opinion, is the hardest of the three levels. You have four different garages to send vehicles to, as well as a train that goes through the centre of the map randomly throughout gameplay (you do, at least, get a warning when it’s coming). Construction works will appear at random times, accompanied by drilling sounds and vibrations. You must tap these three times to get rid of them, because if you don’t, traffic cannot get past, and your road rage meter will fill up very quickly.

carmaniacentral

Car Mania supports OpenFeint for high scores, so you can see your Facebook and Twitter friends scores, as well as see where you rank on the global leader boards. You can listen to your music while playing as well, simply by pressing the ‘play music’ button on the main menu. Everything about Car Mania is beautifully designed and well thought out, right down to the sound effects. This game is one of the best games I have played and the 99c price tag will hardly break the bank.

iPhoneWorld.ca: Amazing Slow Downer: iPhone App Review

Amazing Slow Downer is an audio tool for editing the pitch and speed of music so you can listen to specific sections of songs you might be trying to learn or transcribe.

asdweb

Because of Apple restrictions you cannot use songs from your library on your iPhone so importing is done through a browser on a desktop PC. To import a song you must also have a wi-fi connection. Select import and you will be given an IP address to go to on your PC (eg. 192.168.2.1:1234). Going to this page shows the upload screen (above), and by clicking browse you can select a song stored on your computer. Click ‘upload’ and a progress bar will appear on your iPhone showing the progress of the upload (below).

asdupload

Once you have imported a song, selecting it from the list on the main screen takes you into the editing part of the app. Mix (left and right speaker levels), Pitch (low and high sounds) and Speed (33% to 200%) can be adjusted from this screen. You can make adjustments before you play the track, or you can make adjustments whilst the track is playing to get the exact speed and pitch you’re looking for. You can also choose to loop the song (it will play over and over), as well as set start and end points for the track. There is one small gripe I have with this app, and it’s that you cannot get the edited songs back to the PC as all the adjustments are saved in your iPhone, not directly to the track itself. This is not a massive problem, as most of us have our iPhone with us most of the time.

asdedit

One other ‘feature’ that is definitely worth mentioning, is that through the web interface you can easily transfer files between your phone and any other wi-fi connected computer. I successfully downloaded then uploaded a word document with no problems at all. Not exactly a main feature of the app, but very useful to have nevertheless. This is a great tool for any musician and there is a lite version (limited to playing the first quarter of a song) so you can try it out before you splash out $14.99 on the full version.

Formula Racing is a tilt sensitive racing game for the iPhone.

formularacing-1

You start with one track unlocked and you must finish each track before unlocking the next one (you don’t have to come first, just finish the race). You control you red F1 style car by tilting the iPhone in the direction you want to go. This takes some getting used to, but once you do, the game is relatively easy to pick up and play. The tilt sensitivity can be adjusted in the settings, to suit your gameplay style. There are ten tracks in Formula Racing, which increase in difficulty as you go on.

formularacing

There are a couple of things I personally think are missing from this game. I would like to be able to change the amount of laps I have to do on each track (three is the only option) as well as changing the difficulty of the opponents. Once you have got the hang of the game, you can win the first few levels without even trying, so a difficulty setting would be good. I would also like to be able to change the colour of my car, although this isn’t a major issue.

The graphics are not the best available on the iPhone but they are certainly good enough considering the type of game. Overall, this game is great fun and is a great use of the accelerometer, but without a difficulty setting, this games lifespan is reasonably short-lived.

iPhoneWorld.ca: Another iPhone App Bites the Dust – Google Voice Infact

July 30, 2009

iPhoneWorld.ca writes:

Apple have played yet another joker card in the ongoing app store debacle – they have rejected the Google Voice App. A publication on TechCrunch quotes a Google Spokesperson stating the app, which was submitted 6 weeks ago, was rejected by Apple. There is no word on why, but there are rumours AT&T have had an influence on the decision.

voiceappdecline

Think about it, if Google Voice was accepted and published as an application on the store, people could use their Voice Number and pay for SMS and MMS via Google rather than AT&T thus bypassing their charges. If AT&T do have a strong influence on app submissions, it’s possible this one was knocked off the chart due to this reason.

Now, there is another twist to the story – Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt is one of Apple’s Directors which would suggest he has certain perks and knows who to speak to should he want to side for or against an app but it doesn’t seem so, either that or it’s some kind of double bluff. Either way, us – the end users are the ones who miss out. Apple aren’t doing their ‘valued customers’ any favours by declining apps that we want to see…especially without a valid reason and yes, as usual, they’re keeping everything quiet.
