CoreCase Aluminum Slider for iPhone 3G 1-Month Long-term Review

March 31, 2009

corecase.pngI have a confession to make, I’m always searching for a better case for my iPhone 3G. At times, I find myself being obsessive…not wanting a case to be too thick, too thin, rubbery or not too rubbery…and to top it off, I like change.

I’ve tried sliders, shell-like back protectors, skins and every one of them has good and bad features. Then, in my relentless pursuit of a case, out of nowhere, comes the CoreCase Aluminum slider.

Like the name suggest, the CoreCase Aluminum slider is a two-piece case that is made out of aluminum and padded on the inside with soft, almost felt-like material. I think that the material inside is of higher quality than felt and the perfect choice for protecting your iPhone from scratches, bumps and falls. Just to give you a quick idea of what the case looks like, I’ve done an unboxing for your viewing pleasure.

So my initial opinion is that this case was very well made and had all of its bases covered. It felt like a strong case, had inner protection and didn’t interfere with normal, day to day iPhone use. I really liked this case and although it added a little bulk, to me the protection was worth every gram. The case didn’t add too much bulk and the case made my phone look sleek..I think a good description would be an iron man-like protection.
So now it’s been a month later, and what do I think? Before I complete my long-term review, I wanted to show you my review half-way into my testing.
Again, I just want to say that this case, in my eyes, has met its mark for so many of it’s features. In other words, its a solid case that has more pros than cons. It will protect your phone fully, both inside and out and is a nice looking case. Things that CoreCases can improve on in the future are: possibly making grips or something on the case to make it easier to grap and possibly changing the latch mechanism..I do think that it may get loose over time and in the month that I was testing the product, it feels like it had to be re-adjusted.
One thing of note, in the latter half of my testing, I actually dropped this case and my iPhone two times and both times the case protected it flawlessly. I do really appreciate this case and think that it does an awesome job at what its supposed to do. I fully endorse this case to anyone who is willing to trade protection for a little heft.
This is a good case, good job CoreCases keep up the good work! You’ve got my vote.

Katana App Review

March 31, 2009

katana.pngRelive those old Japanese Samurai movies with Appliya’s Katana KATANA application. Hear the realistic sounds of a katana slicing through the air as you swing your iphone through imaginary opponents.

With a flick of your finger, unsheathe the cold, steel blade of your virtual katana. After you’ve sliced your opponents, sheathe your sword and hear your opponents fall to the ground.

Not only does this app feature slicing and clashing sounds, but it also includes Japanese styled background music. Have a look at my video review, Enjoy!

iPhone OS 3.0 SDK Beta Delivers on Most Fronts

March 31, 2009

ip30sdk.pngJust released to developers on Tuesday, the iPhone OS 3.0 beta addresses some of the issues users have been recently clamoring for. Not only will the beta give the users a chance to see new features, but more importantly, it will give developers the time to test these new features in their programs.

As a budding developer, I closely watched the webcast and noticed how Apple methodically went over all the so called shortcomings of the current iPhone OS and showed them off as part of the new 3.0 features.

As rumored, here’s a quick rundown of what exactly was announced. The major points were:

  • In app purchases – you’ll be able to conduct micro-purchases in your applications
  • PNS – yes it’s the infamous Push Notification Services…if you’ve been following this column you’ll know how I talked about that many a time
  • Accessories – this one to me is HUGE, 3rd party hardware developers can now tap into the iPhone and create new and exciting devices…i can’t wait to see what the market will bring
  • Peer to peer connectivity – it’ll be easier for iPhone-ers to find eachother and developers can make social networking even easier
  • Maps – maps can now be integrated into applications, no explanation needed
  • iPod library access – access the users library from within you app

and to top it off there are over 1,000 new APIs, in other words, more ways  for developers to do new things and provide new functionality for iPhone users out there….

If you want to read about the beta, the information is available on Apple’s website as is the webcast…have a look, it’s quite interesting.

iPhone OS 3.0 SDK Sneak Peak

March 31, 2009

If you weren’t already aware, Apple is set to unveil some of the features of the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 today at a special media event scheduled for 10 a.m. PST. There have been much speculation as to what exactly is going to be shown today, but in MY opinion, much of the speculation is just speculation on the writer’s part.

The only “real” features that have somehow rised to the surface are:
  • Cut & Paste
  • Tethering
  • and MMS

I really hope that Apple has more up its sleeves for us today during this event those those three features, otherwise, a LOT of people will be walking away unhappy. I feel that this event will and can be much more. I think Apple needs to assert it’s leadership once again in being innovative and show how the next SDK can be leveraged to produce next generation iPhone applications.

We’ll see how Apple has always had a grand design in mind and how all the pieces fit together. I wonder if we’ll see a cameo from Steve Jobs. I doubt it, but it can’t hurt to wish…
In any case, I’ll probably be watching Engadget or another site eagerly to see what’s announced at 7 a.m. HST. Where are you getting your feed? In fact, the more I think about it, I just may follow the media event in twitter.
Have fun and catch ya after the event!

Evangelion Vol. 2 Clock & Vol. 3 Stamp Review

March 31, 2009

eclock.pngFans of the hit Japanese anime series Evangelion can now enjoy the world of Evangelion on their iPhones with these two applications from Appliya.

The first application that I’m reviewing is the Evangelion Vol. 2 Clock app Evangelion vol.2 Clock. Now you can pull out your iPhone and impress your friends with this Evangelion-inspired clock. Imagine yourself at the NERV headquarters watching the time countdown. Also included in this app is a timer mode with authentic sounds and all.

With the Evangelion vol. 3 Picture Stamp app Evangelion vol.3 Picture Stamp, you’ll be able to decorate all your favorite pictures with Evangelion characters, icons and other artifacts from the movie. Take a picture from your picture roll or even take one on the spot, choose a “stamp”, resize it and Voila!, you’ve got your own Evangelion themed picture! It’s really easy and fun!

Watch my video to see the apps in action.

He points out that the Mac Pro, like all Macs, is free of crapware.
